Undertile Cable Sizing Table

Measure only the floor area you intend to heat, excluding fixed units and fittings. Use the relevant column as a starting point, then confirm the cable spacing and output for your complete floor construction.

CHOOSE BY ROOM SHAPE

Still Choosing Between Mats and Cable?

If you have not settled on loose cable, compare the alternatives for your room layout.

MAT

Regular, open floor area

A pre-spaced MD heating mat is usually quicker to position across uncomplicated tiled rooms.

LOOSE CABLE

Irregular or awkward room

UltraTec loose cable can follow alcoves, curves and fixed obstacles at a planned spacing.

HEATBASE

Cable with uncoupling membrane

The HeatBase kit combines loose cable with a decoupling membrane for a guided cable layout.

ESSENTIAL RULES

Check the Layout Before Installation

The current Elektra instructions take priority over this selection summary.

Never cut the heating cable

Select a fixed cable length that fits the planned heated area at the approved spacing.

Keep runs separated

Cable runs must not cross or touch and must maintain the specified minimum spacing.

Test during installation

Record resistance and insulation-resistance readings at the stages required by the current manual.

Use a qualified electrician

The final electrical connection and circuit protection must be completed and verified correctly.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Cable Selection Questions

Common checks when moving from room area to cable size.

Should I use the full room area?

No. Use the free floor area that can safely be heated after excluding fixed furniture and permanent fittings.

Can I shorten a cable that is too long?

No. The heating cable cannot be cut or shortened. Select a smaller cable or revise the approved layout.

When is a mat easier than loose cable?

A pre-spaced mat is generally simpler in regular, open rooms. Loose cable is more flexible around awkward edges and obstacles.
