The flexible cable solution

What Is An UltraTec Heating Cable?

UltraTec is an ultra-thin, high-temperature-resistant electric heating cable supplied as a ready-to-install length with a cold tail. Unlike a pre-spaced mat, the loose cable can be routed around awkward shapes and fixed obstacles.

The cable delivers 10W per linear metre. Its spacing determines the output per square metre, so the heated area, floor finish and room heat loss must be considered together before the cable is selected.

10W per linear metre Flexible output through planned spacing
2 × 3mm maximum Ultra-thin cable profile
100% earthed Screened cable construction
6–8mm covering Approved adhesive or levelling compound

Best for irregular rooms and detailed layouts. For open, regular-shaped spaces, a pre-spaced MD heating mat may be simpler.

Choose the right cable

Plan Your Cable Layout

UltraTec is selected by cable length and designed spacing—not by cutting the cable to fit. Start with the actual free floor area and the output the room needs.

1

Room Shape

Map irregular edges, alcoves, obstacles and the full route before selecting a cable.

2

Usable Heated Area

Exclude fixed furniture, baths, kitchen units and other areas that must not be heated.

3

Planned Output & Spacing

Match cable length and spacing to the heated area, required output and floor finish.

How UltraTec Is Installed

The cable is fixed across the prepared floor at the approved spacing, tested, and then completely covered within the specified floor build-up.

  1. Prepare a stable subfloor and install suitable insulation where specified
  2. Plan the complete cable route, cold-tail position and floor-sensor location
  3. Fix the cable at the approved spacing without crossing, touching or shortening it
  4. Test the cable, then cover it with the specified adhesive or levelling compound

Why Variable Spacing Matters

Because UltraTec delivers 10W per metre, the distance between cable runs controls how much heat is installed per square metre. This makes the system flexible, but it also means the layout must be planned before installation.

  • Loose cable follows curved, narrow and irregular usable floor areas
  • Closer spacing increases output per square metre within the approved limits
  • Wider spacing lowers output and may suit compatible temperature-sensitive finishes
  • Final spacing must follow the current UltraTec design and installation guidance

Where UltraTec Works Best

UltraTec is particularly useful where a pre-spaced mat cannot cover the usable floor evenly. The final finish determines how the cable must be covered, so confirm every layer before ordering.

  • Irregular or awkward rooms where a pre-spaced mat is difficult to position
  • Solid, screeded, beam-and-block, suspended timber or batten constructions when correctly prepared
  • Tile and stone floors within an approved flexible adhesive or levelling build-up
  • Compatible wood, laminate, vinyl or carpet after the cable is fully covered by levelling compound

Typical UltraTec Floor Build-Up

UltraTec must be fully contained within a 6–8mm layer of compatible flexible tile adhesive or self-levelling compound before the approved floor finish is installed.

  1. Prepared and stable subfloor
  2. Suitable insulation or tile backer board where specified
  3. UltraTec cable, cold tail and correctly positioned floor sensor
  4. 6–8mm flexible adhesive or self-levelling compound
  5. Compatible finished floor

UltraTec cable advice

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about selecting, planning and installing an Elektra UltraTec heating cable.

What is UltraTec heating cable?

UltraTec is a loose, ultra-thin ELEKTRA heating cable rated at 10W per linear metre. It is designed for indoor direct floor heating and can be positioned at planned spacings across irregular or awkward usable floor areas.

How do I choose the cable length and spacing?

Measure the free floor area that can actually be heated, decide the required output per square metre and select the cable length closest to the calculated design. The cable cannot be shortened, so confirm the final layout and spacing before ordering.

Can UltraTec be used beneath wood, vinyl or carpet?

Yes, when the selected floor covering is approved for electric underfloor heating and the UltraTec cable is first fully covered by a suitable self-levelling compound. Confirm the complete build-up, temperature limit and thermal resistance with every manufacturer involved.

Can UltraTec cable be cut or shortened?

No. The heating cable must never be cut or shortened. Only the cold tail may be shortened where permitted. Choose a cable length that fits the usable heated area at the approved spacing.
