AD-CHIPBOARD floor build-up over insulated timber joists

Water underfloor heating solution

AD-CHIPBOARD Grooved Floor System

Water underfloor heating built into a grooved chipboard floor deck for timber-floor projects.

Foil-faced panels hold the heating pipe within the floor deck. Add the specified protective layer and chosen floor covering to complete a dry construction without a traditional screed.

Installation overview

How AD-CHIPBOARD Is Installed

Plan the deck and pipe routes together. For a joisted installation, follow the project design and current product instructions:

  1. 1Confirm heat loss, joist layout, manifold position, pipe circuits and the complete floor build-up.
  2. 2Prepare the joists and fit insulation between them. Product guidance specifies a maximum 600mm joist spacing; confirm the structural design.
  3. 3Glue adjoining tongue-and-groove edges and the panel-to-joist contact areas, then screw the panels to the joists as specified.
  4. 4Fit the 12mm PERT pipe into the routed channels through the foil, following the planned circuit routes.
  5. 5Connect, fill and pressure-test the circuits before covering the pipe.
  6. 6Mechanically fix the specified protective deck without damaging the pipe, then fit the approved floor finish.

Understanding the floor deck

Grooved Boards with a Protective Top Layer

The grooved chipboard carries the heating pipe within the deck. A separate flooring-grade layer above it provides a stable base for the finish and helps protect the pipe during future floor replacement.

  • Routed channels position the pipe at 150mm centres.
  • Tongue-and-groove edges join adjoining panels.
  • The foil facing forms part of the heating panel.
  • The protective top layer is separate from the 22mm heating board.

Where AD-CHIPBOARD Works Best

Consider AD-CHIPBOARD where a chipboard floor deck is being installed or replaced. If the existing deck is staying, compare the overlay systems before choosing.

  • New builds and extensions with a designed timber floor.
  • Renovations where the existing floor deck is being replaced.
  • Suitable joisted or battened constructions with insulation below.
  • Projects allowing for a protective deck and the chosen floor finish.

AD-CHIPBOARD project advice

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about board thickness, joists, protective layers and choosing your kit.

What is the AD-CHIPBOARD system?

It is a water underfloor heating system using 22mm foil-faced, grooved P5 chipboard panels and 12mm PERT pipe. The panels combine the floor deck with channels for the heating pipe.

How much floor height does it need?

The heating board is 22mm thick. The protective deck and chosen floor finish add to this. The product guidance specifies 6mm or thicker plywood for carpet, laminate and timber, while other finishes may need a different preparation layer.

What joist spacing is required?

The product guidance gives a maximum joist spacing of 600mm, with insulation between the joists. Your designer must confirm the joist sizes, supports, floor loading and fixing specification for the project.

Can I lay the floor finish directly on the heating panels?

A separate, mechanically fixed flooring-grade layer is required above the heating panels. It provides a stable base and helps protect the pipe when floor coverings are replaced. Fixings must avoid the pipe routes.

Can I use tiles or vinyl?

They can be considered with the correct sub-deck and preparation. Depending on the finish, this may involve thicker plywood, a suitable backer board or a preparation layer. Follow the flooring and preparation-product manufacturers' instructions.

Is it the same as a thin overlay system?

AD-CHIPBOARD is suited to projects where a grooved chipboard floor deck is being fitted. If you intend to retain the existing structural floor, compare the overlay options or ask us to check the construction.

Can I use it for several rooms or zones?

The product is offered as a single-zone kit. Multiple rooms or separate temperature zones need a suitable circuit layout, manifold and control specification. Send us your plans so we can check what is required.

How do I choose the correct kit?

Provide your heated area, room plan, floor construction, heat source and zoning requirements. The design should confirm board quantities, circuit lengths, manifold size and controls.
