ELEKTRA VCD 17 twin-conductor heating cable

Heating within the screed

What Is the VCD 17 System?

VCD 17 is a fixed-length, twin-conductor heating cable installed within a new screed. The screed stores and distributes warmth, so the heating is planned as part of the floor construction.

It is a different approach from a thin undertile mat. Consider it while the floor is being built, rather than as a surface addition to an existing finished floor.

Where VCD 17 Works Best

VCD 17 suits projects that already include a new screed. The current manufacturer’s selection table lists ceramic, stone and suitable PVC finishes; wood and fitted carpet need a different cable selection.

  • New builds or renovations where a new screed is already planned
  • Ceramic, stone or suitable PVC flooring approved for the complete heated build-up
  • Primary heating where the design confirms sufficient output for the room’s heat loss
  • Rooms with a planned heating schedule that accounts for screed warm-up and cooling

Typical VCD 17 Floor Build-Up

Plan each layer from the supporting floor to the finished surface. The floor designer specifies the insulation and screed depth; confirm the cable layout and compatible finish before work begins.

  1. Prepared supporting floor — Structurally suitable for the planned build-up.
  2. Specified insulation and separating layer — Selected as part of the floor design.
  3. VCD 17 cable within the screed — Cable layout and controls follow the approved design.
  4. Compatible floor finish — Allow for any required adhesive or preparation layers.

Plan before the screed is laid

How VCD 17 Is Installed

The cable is fixed and tested before the screed covers it. The final connection and required electrical checks are completed by a qualified electrician.

  1. Confirm the design: Agree the floor finish, screed build-up, heated area and controls before choosing the cable.
  2. Prepare and fit: Install the specified floor layers, cable fixing and sensor provision. Never cut or shorten the heating cable.
  3. Test and cover: Record the required electrical tests and protect the cable while the screed is installed.
  4. Finish and commission: Follow the screed and flooring curing instructions. A qualified electrician completes the final connection.

Match the heating to the room

Heat Output and Daily Use

17W per metre is the cable’s linear output, not the output per square metre of floor. The selected cable length, heated area and permitted spacing determine the floor layout.

  • Calculate the room’s heat loss before relying on the floor as its only heat source
  • Allow for the slower response of a screeded floor when setting heating times
  • For existing floors with limited height, compare a thin mat or undertile cable instead

Frequently Asked Questions

Can VCD 17 heat the whole room?

It may provide primary heating where the design confirms sufficient output for the room’s heat loss. It can also be used for supplementary floor comfort.

Is VCD 17 suitable under wood or carpet?

Do not select VCD 17 on that assumption. ELEKTRA’s model-specific table directs those finishes to other VCD variants. Ask us to confirm a compatible system for your chosen flooring.

How thick should the screed be?

The required depth depends on the screed product, floor construction and project specification. Confirm it with the screed supplier and floor designer before ordering.

Can the cable be shortened to fit?

No. Select the correct cable length and layout before installation. The heating cable must not be cut or shortened.
