Electric underfloor heating installation
Plan the complete layout, protect the heating cable and record tests before, during and after installation.
The carrier mesh can be cut to turn the mat where the instructions allow, but the heating cable itself must never be cut, shortened, crossed or overlapped. Final electrical connection belongs with a qualified electrician.
PREPARATION
Good planning protects the cable, the floor finish and the warranty record.
Confirm that the output and complete construction suit the subfloor, room use and final floor finish.
Keep the mat clear of permanent floor-level units, sanitaryware and areas where heat cannot dissipate safely.
Agree the supply, RCD protection, load, thermostat position and wiring route with the electrician before covering the floor.
Check that the floor is sound, clean, dry, level and primed where the instructions require it.
Keep the mat label, test readings, floor plan and installation photographs for the warranty record.
Read the adhesive, levelling compound and floor-finish instructions, including minimum cover and curing time.
A capable installer can complete the physical floor work, while electrical supply, wiring and final commissioning remain professional tasks.
| Task | Competent installer | Qualified electrician |
|---|---|---|
| Measure the room and create the mat layout | Yes | Review load and electrical zones where relevant |
| Prepare the subfloor and lay the mat | Yes, following the supplied manual | Not normally required for this stage |
| Record resistance and insulation test results | Only if trained and using the correct tester | Recommended; verify final readings |
| Install supply, protective devices and thermostat wiring | No | Yes |
| Final connection and commissioning | No | Yes |
Record readings before laying the mat, after laying it and again after it has been covered. Compare heating-cable resistance with the product label and the tolerances in the supplied manual.
| Checkpoint | Heating-cable resistance | Insulation resistance | Recorded by / date |

| Before installation | _____ Ω | _____ MΩ | ________________ |
| After the mat is laid | _____ Ω | _____ MΩ | ________________ |
| After covering / before connection | _____ Ω | _____ MΩ | ________________ |
Follow the supplied manual for the exact product, materials and electrical test requirements.
Mark the complete mat area and all permanent exclusions. Confirm the cold tail can reach the connection point without extending or crossing the heating cable.
Remove dust, sharp projections and loose material. Repair movement or unevenness, then prime and install compatible insulation or tile backer board where specified.
Provide the required conduits or routes. Seal the sensor conduit against adhesive and make the sensor replaceable wherever possible.
Check the label, measure heating-cable and insulation resistance, and record both results before unrolling.
Check every turn, exclusion and connection point before fixing. Never stretch the mesh or squeeze cable into an undersized space.
Carefully cut only the carrier mesh, then turn or flip it while maintaining the cable spacing in the manual. Never touch or shorten the cable.
Place it in its conduit midway between two parallel cable runs, within the heated area and away from external heat sources.
Fix the mesh flat by the approved method. Recess bulky factory joints only where permitted so the floor remains level and the cable is not strained.
Repeat and record both tests. If a reading moves outside tolerance, stop and resolve the cause before covering.
Use compatible flexible adhesive or levelling compound with the required minimum cover. Avoid cable damage and air pockets.
Test after covering. Give the readings, label and layout record to the electrician for connection, thermostat setup and commissioning.
Do not switch on early. Wait for the full cure time for the adhesive, compound and finish, then follow the recommended first-heating procedure.
FINAL RECORDS
A complete record helps protect the warranty and makes future support or floor work safer.
Electric mat installation advice
Answers about cutting mesh, shared controls, cure times and test readings.
You may cut the carrier mesh at a turn if the product instructions allow it, but you must never cut, shorten or damage the heating cable itself.
Sometimes, provided the combined load, thermostat rating, circuit design and protective devices are suitable. The electrician must check before connection; a contactor or separate control may be required.
Only after the adhesive, levelling compound and floor finish have fully cured. Use the longest applicable cure time and follow the floor-finish manufacturer's first-heating instructions.
Stop and compare the reading with the label and manual tolerance. Do not cover or connect the mat until the cause has been investigated. Keep the readings and photographs for technical support.
