PIPE FROST PROTECTION

How to Stop Pipes Freezing

Use the correct trace-heating cable, insulation and control arrangement for the pipework and conditions.

This guide explains the planning route for protecting suitable pipes and valves from freezing without relying on outdated one-size-fits-all limits.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CABLE TYPE

Packaged Cable or Project-Specific Trace Heating?

The correct route depends on pipe length, material, exposure, temperature and the number of branches or valves.

INSTALLATION PLANNING

Four Steps Before the System Is Energised

The current product manual remains the controlling installation document.

Assess the pipework

Record the pipe material, outside diameter, length, valves, branches, ambient conditions and available electrical supply.

Select and position the cable

Use a cable approved for the application and arrange it only as permitted by the manual. Do not cut a fixed-length heating element.

Apply compatible insulation

Insulate the protected pipework using the specified type and thickness, while keeping thermostats and sensing positions correctly located.

Test, label and commission

Complete the required electrical tests, fit identification labels and verify the control operation before leaving the system in service.

SAFETY AND COMPATIBILITY

Check the Pipe, Insulation and Electrical System Together

Trace heating can be damaged or perform poorly if any part of the build-up is unsuitable.

Pipe compatibility

Confirm the cable and fixing method suit the pipe material and operating temperature.

Insulation compatibility

Use insulation approved for the pipe and trace-heating arrangement, including any required protective layers.

Electrical protection

Plan the supply, controls, circuit protection and final connection in accordance with applicable requirements.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Pipe Frost-Protection Questions

Important distinctions before selecting a cable.

Can I cut a FreezeTec cable to length?

Do not cut or shorten a fixed-length heating element. Select the correct product length and follow its current instructions.

Is insulation still required?

Trace heating and insulation normally work together. Use the insulation type and thickness specified for the product and design conditions.

Can the same cable be used on every pipe material?

No. Confirm product, fixing and temperature compatibility with the actual pipe material before installation.
