Snow-covered home with a clear heated driveway protected from snow and ice

OUTDOOR SURFACE HEATING

Snow and Ice Prevention for Driveways

Keep priority outdoor areas safer and accessible through snow and freezing conditions.

Compare ELEKTRA SnowTec and SnowTec Tuff systems for driveways, paths, ramps and access routes. The correct mat depends on the surface construction and installation method.

CHOOSE BY SURFACE

Which SnowTec Mat Do I Need?

Start with your surface and how it will be laid. Both systems are built into the driveway, with different mats for different construction methods.

PROJECT PLANNING

Plan Your Driveway Heating

A complete system needs heating mats, compatible controls and sensors, plus a suitable electrical supply and installation. Plan these alongside the driveway construction before ordering.

Choose the area to protect

Measure the wheel tracks, ramp, entrance or walking route you want to keep clear. You may not need to heat the whole driveway. Agree the level of protection you need, allowing for local weather conditions.

Check the surface and drainage

Confirm the base, finished surface and installation depth with your contractor. Plan where meltwater will drain and whether the drainage needs frost protection too.

Include automatic controls

Specify compatible controls, such as ETR2 or ETO2, with ground temperature and moisture sensing. Ask us to check the controller and sensor package for your layout and confirm what is included in your order.

Arrange the electrical work

Have a suitably qualified electrician check the available supply, total heating load, cable routes and RCD protection before work starts. They should complete the final connection, testing and commissioning.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Driveway-Heating Questions

Practical answers about fitting, controlling and running your system.

Can this be fitted to an existing driveway?

The mats must be built into a suitable surface construction, not laid loose on top. Retrofitting will usually involve lifting paving or rebuilding part of the surface, so it is best considered when resurfacing. Ask us to assess your existing driveway before choosing a system.

Does it run continuously?

With compatible automatic controls, no. Temperature and moisture sensors tell the controller when heating is needed, rather than leaving the mats on throughout winter. Operating time depends on weather conditions and the controller settings.

What affects running costs?

The main factors are the heated area, mat output, time spent heating and your electricity tariff. Weather, exposure and control settings affect how long the system runs. Send us your proposed layout so we can discuss the heating load and coverage; a fixed daily cost would be misleading without these details.
