Underfloor Heating for Laminate Floors

22nd Aug 2024

Underfloor heating is quickly becoming the number one solution in new build and renovation properties due to its efficiency and effectiveness in heating homes. There are many solutions available to cater to your specific requirements, such as  electric or water floor heating systems.

Can Underfloor Heating Be Used With Underfloor Heating?

Laminate flooring remains one of the most popular choices due to its durability, style and affordability. When coupled with underfloor heating, it's a match made in heaven.

Laminate is a great floor finish as it is water-resistant and often comes with a scratch-resistant finish, making it ideal in the family home with children or pets. Laminate floors are typically made with high-density fibre board and feature a layer on top to provide the look or "finish" to the floor.

The great thing about laminate flooring is that the designs and styles are endless with designs ranging from wood effects or even stone.

Why Use Laminate Flooring with Underfloor Heating?

Laminate floor finishes are perfect with underfloor heating. It is a hard-wearing, affordable and extremely stable material that isn't prone to warping when exposed to temperature fluctuations. This is important to consider when choosing a floor finish with underfloor heating.

Things to Consider

When installing laminate floor finishes on top of underfloor heating, there are a few things to consider.

Maximum Temperature

Although laminate flooring is suitable for both electric and water underfloor heating systems, there are some limitations to consider. It is recommended that the maximum temperature that the floor should be heated to is no more than 27°C to avoid the potential of damaging your laminate flooring.

Most underfloor heating systems will utilise both an air temperature sensor and a floor temperature sensor, which will make sure that your floor heating system is not running too hot.

Laminate Flooring Thicknesses

Some laminate flooring may be too thick to be effectively used with underfloor heating and will make running your underfloor heating expensive and inefficient. Typically it is recommended to use laminate flooring which is no thicker than 18mm to make sure that the heat can effectively transfer into the room.
